Reiable piece of kit, 2009-06-18 I've been using this for a year now with no problems. It isn't silent and it doesn't actually shred but it is still brilliant. The machine pulls green waste through a revolving metal device. The lack of blades mean it is relatively quiet-i.e. forget listening to the radio while its going but you don't need ear protectors either. The resulting product is a mashed up bag of mixed mulch. This works well on the compost heap providing you have a reasonable system already. i.e. the temptation to put through too much woody stuff which you would have otherwise chucked means you need to balance it in your heap with greener, wetter material. (I had to build two new ones) Its best then to 'shred' a variety of different material in the same load-the leafier stuff is more inclined to stick but is easily unjammed using reverse mechanism-make sure to switch off first-I didn't and when failed to restart I immediately assumed I'd broken it-very grateful to find it had only tripped circuit breaker I was using.I find a fully laden wheelbarrow reduces to fill the bag-you'll be glad of the break by then. Thoroughly recommended.
Not so much leaf shredder as leaf presser, 2009-06-05 As others have said, the shredder is quiet and chops up woody branches in quick order. However, not having used a shredder before, I imagined it would do just that - shred things, which it doesn't do with everything.
I started with a lot of those long tendril-like holly tree branches. The green stems went through the machine whole, albeit mangled. The holly leaves were removed from the stems but emerged into the bag undamaged. My friend who, unlike me, has used a shredder before, says that should not happen. I was later able to inflict a few cuts into the leaves by tightening the mechanism, even though the instructions say this isn't necessary when first out of the box.
Nonetheless, I was impressed with the speediness and short work made of 'proper' branches, hence 4 stars. Oh, and the box is VERY heavy; make sure you have some help carrying it (it's OK once the wheels are on).
Great machine, 2009-06-04 After looking carefully at many other shredders, I chose this one, mainly because of the great reviews it got from other customers. I am very glad I did, as evrything that was said about the shredder is true. The only gripe I have with it, is that it makes hard work of branches that are near it's size limit, it stops crunching when it comes to a knot in the branch at that size.
A final word on the 'white gloves' service that is offered by Amazon....I received mine after about 10 days!
Good Machine, 2009-05-24 I have quite a big garden with long mixed hedges along two sides that needs constant trimming. This machine chops the stuff up into pieces about 20-25mm long and does it quietly.I think an impact shredder would cut stuff up finer that could be more useful as a mulch but have heard that they are quite noisy. This one pulls the branches in automatically and I am pleased with the results. They are more expensive than impact types but I think it was worth paying more for my situation.Go for it!!
A Good Little Shredder, 2009-05-22 This shredder does what you would expect it to and does it well. I particularly liked the auto feed and the quiet operation. It feels powerful and up to dealing with everything that will go into the chute. The only material it won't deal with is lush green plant growth which sits in the chute and won't go through. It deals with branches and other woody material admirably. It replaces my old machine very satisfactorily
