I can see clearly now, 2007-03-31 I bought this Bosch AXT 200 Rapid shredder as I have (or should I now say 'had') a number of shrubs/ small trees in the garden that were threatening to take over. I have not lifted the top off or sharpened the blades as the previous reviewer but I have worked this shredder hard, 3 solid days of shredding which actually becomes addictive. It will take branches of up to 1"-1.5" diameter and may even cope with a bit wider with a bit of patience and it coped with all of the greenery I needed it to. The shredder did jam a couple of times but only really when I tried something too big and there is a reverse screw option which usually unblocked things with a couple of forwards and backwards movements, but obviously watch for overheating the motor. What I did find is that sometimes things just lay across the blades and were not caught up in the movement - usually lighter branches and it was useful to have a piece of stout branch to push them towards the mechanism. It has a hopper like top which narrows towards the centre and so unless you were really determined (and foolhardy) your hands are not near the mechanism. What I particularly liked was that you could cut off a long branch and just put it straight into the machine and the shredder would take it in by itself (watch out for the branch whipping round a bit) but great for those thorny shrubs like pyracantha where minimal handling is an advantage Not having a collection bag is a bit of a nuisance but once you get into the swing of things a normal plastic sack will do. I actually filled 17 large rubbish bags with shredded shrubs ready for composting. All in all a great bit of kit which gives a great sense of satisfaction in converting an overgrown garden into a row of neat bags!
Powerfull well designed shredder, 2007-01-19 I bought the Bosch AXT200 Rapid shredder to help me clear up my garden and quicken the composting process of the garden waste.
I had read about problems with these types of spinning blade garden shredders blocking and blunting the blades very quickly.
Well I'm happy to report that this shredder is well designed and doesn't block easily at all, and when it does its literally a 20 second job to lift the front off and clear it out.
I spend an entire day shredding and clearing my garden with this shredder and it only blocked once even though it was pouring with rain, the shredder was under cover but the branches and twigs were soaking wet.
The blade was still sharp even after shredding many 1 inch thick branches for over two hours, They did start to dull after 5 hours hard use but were still cutting.
The blade is reversible so a new cutting edge is ready if you turn it over.
I sharpened my blade with a diamond file and it cuts like new.
I would recommend getting a set of diamond files (they only cost ~£[...] for a set)
As this will allow you to sharpen the blade many times compared to normal files as you remove less metal to get a sharp edge.
My neighbour has shredder based on the gear crushing system like a lot of the bigger shredders but he is often (about once a year) spending out on a new gear set (~£[...])
Where as my AXT 200 blades cost as little as £[...] if you shop around.
Changing the blades/sharpening or just turning it over is a really easy job requiring certainly no more than 5 minutes plus the time to sharpen it if that's your choice.
Another plus point is that this shredder produces much smaller "chippings" than the gear or worm screw type shredders, so I'm expecting the resulting mulch to rot down much quicker.
All in all it's proved to be a very powerful and useful tool and at a price which is hardly any more than the budget brands out there and you're getting much better build quality than most others too.
Just one word of warning it doesn't come with a collection bag (well mine didn't) so buy some garden bags, it has hooks on each side to support a bag.
Other than that get shredding.
